August Coffee of the Month: Rwanda
This month, we're thrilled to feature a vibrant and complex cup from the highlands of Gatagara Village in Rwanda’s Gakenke District. Grown between 1800–2100 meters above sea level in rich volcanic loam, this Rainforest Alliance-certified lot comes from 836 smallholder farmers who deliver their harvest to the renowned Ruli Washing Station, operated by the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative.
With a medium roast, this coffee bursts with tropical brightness and juicy sweetness. You’ll taste notes of papaya, passion fruit, apricot, lemon, and caramel—all beautifully layered in a cup that’s bright, well-balanced, and memorable.
What makes this coffee truly special is the heart behind it. Dukunde Kawa is a powerhouse of innovation and equity in Rwandan coffee, with more than 80% of its workforce being women. Ruli is their largest and highest-elevation washing station, and thanks to the cooler climate and slow ripening process, the harvest stretches late into the season—resulting in a depth of flavor you can taste.
Carefully fully washed and dried on raised beds over 14–21 days, every bean in this lot reflects the cooperative’s dedication to quality, sustainability, and community.
