September Coffee of the Month – Burundi

This September, we’re thrilled to feature a stunning coffee from the highlands of Kayanza Province, Burundi. Grown at 1900 MASL in rich volcanic loam soil, this local Bourbon cultivar is carefully harvested by over 400 smallholder farmers who make up the Incuti producer group. The result is a medium-light roast that highlights the vibrant character of Burundian coffee.

Flavor Profile

Expertly roasted to preserve clarity and sweetness, this cup opens with lush dried fig, bright notes of lemon, and a smooth caramel finish. It’s a clean, juicy expression of high-elevation Kayanza, perfect for anyone who loves a balanced yet lively brew.

The Story Behind the Coffee

This lot comes to us through JNP Coffee, founded by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, one of the most influential voices in Burundi coffee today. Beyond importing exceptional coffees, JNP is deeply committed to women’s empowerment and community investment. Through programs like the International Women’s Coffee Alliance and their own Dushime initiative (which means “let’s be thankful” in Kirundi), JNP ensures farmers not only receive fair payment, but also long-term support, education, and post-harvest premiums.

The name “Incuti” means “relative” or “friend” in Kirundi—a fitting tribute to the collaborative spirit of this new partnership between JNP and local farmer groups. Each sip is more than delicious—it’s a celebration of connection, empowerment, and resilience.

Processing

The Incuti group follows Burundi’s renowned fully washed method. After density sorting and fermentation, beans are meticulously washed in concrete channels, then slowly dried under both shade and sun. This careful process locks in brightness and ensures a cup that is both complex and refreshingly clean.
