Coffee of the Month For July: Sulawesi- North Tana Toraja

This month, we’re taking your taste buds on a journey to Sulawesi, one of Indonesia’s lushest islands, known for its dramatic landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Nestled in the misty highlands of North Tana Toraja, coffee is grown at elevations up to 2000 meters—some of the highest in the country—by the Torajan tribe, who still live in traditional boat-shaped homes and cultivate coffee on small family farms.

Our featured lot comes from Koperasi Puspeta Luwu, a local cooperative that’s been supporting smallholder farmers for nearly 40 years. These growers handpick cherries from volcanic soil, process them using a unique wet-hulling (Giling Basah) method, and sun-dry them to bring out that unmistakable Sulawesi flavor—deep, earthy, and complex.

Tasting Notes:
Full-bodied and low in acid with a rich, smooth finish. Expect notes of baker’s chocolate and roasted nuts with a subtly complex profile that shines in every cup.

Roast Level: Medium-dark (just into the second crack)
Process: Wet-hulled and sun-dried
Soil: Volcanic loam
Altitude: 1100–2000 MASL

This is the kind of coffee that makes you slow down and savor. Bold, grounded, and a little mysterious—just like Sulawesi itself.
